Method 1 – Scandy Pro 3D Ios Iphone Scanning App Tutorial
Hows it going 3d printers andrew sink here and in this video were going to be talking about how to. Scan and 3d print a replica of this cat figurine the app were going to be using is called scandi. Pro its an ios app that uses the truedepth front-facing camera on an iphone to create a mesh model for. Our setup i have the iphone running scandi pro on a tripod so its stationary and then ive put the.
Cat on a lazy susan so ill be spinning that back and forth so we can create our mesh once. We have a good quality scan were going to clean it up in meshmixer to make it printable and then. Send it off to our 3d printer so we can make a copy of this figurine once we have everything. Set up and in place well check to make sure that the scandi app sees the model in the foreground. Once weve got to this point we can hit start and now it will begin scanning from here all we.
Have to do is slowly rotate the lazy susan making sure that the cat figurine stays in focus if we. See a red flash that means the cameras lost its tracking so we can always move back and then go. Back into the original position to continue scanning for this model i did two full revolutions of the lazy susan. And thats so i captured a good amount of surface detail and also because this was a really shiny model. I wanted to make sure that any glare didnt show up as a defect later on once i was happy.
With the scan i hit end record and now i can view what the mesh looks like and this looks. Pretty good to me so weve captured a lot of the detail theres a few small holes like on the. Top of the ear and under the chin but we can fix those later overall im happy with this so. Im to hit save from scandi pro we also have some basic editing functionality and one of the first things. That you can do is under render mode we can determine if were looking at a color model or a.
Monochrome so because im going to be 3d printing this im not too worried about the texture which is the. Color im more interested in the mesh so by clicking monochrome i can view the mesh and i can see. This is going to work for me scandi pro has some basic editing tools built into it like fill holes. And crop plane but were going to be doing a lot of that in mesh mixer so even though were. Not doing it here its good to know that we have that ability in the app from here all we.
Have to do is export the stl and bring it into meshmixer the first thing we want to do is. Trim away the lazy susan so to do that were going to select all of the non-cat geometry and were. Going to delete it so theres a couple different ways you can do this the easiest way to do it. Is to use the lasso tool in mesh mixer select a large chunk and then click x and that will. Delete it and once we have a couple of these sections deleted we can then do a plain cut to.
Trim away whats left this is just a fast and easy way to get rid of a lot of that. Geometry so i feel pretty good about this right here so from here the next step is were going to. Do a plane cut and typically a plane cut is used to create a solid model which we will be. Doing later here though for instance im going to say no fill under fill type because i dont actually want. To fill the bottom of the model in yet i still have some holes that i need to clean up.
First so we can get down to about here so so it looks like a nice solid model all the. Way around and that looks good to me and well click accept so were already getting closer to what we. Want our final model to look like there are a couple spots on this model that im going to clean. Up manually depending on how much time and effort you want to put into a project like this you can. Spend more or less time doing it all im gonna do is using the flatten brush in mesh mixer under.
The sculpt tools im gonna clean up a little bit of this geometry here because that looks a little bit. Rough to me and were going to do a little bit more manual cleanup later but right now all im. Trying to do is make these holes a little bit clearer so this geometry is now a little bit easier. To fill and it doesnt look quite as jagged so from here the fill process should be a little bit. Easier on the top of that ear there are a couple of small spots in a few different holes that.
We want to fill the easiest way to do that is using the inspector tool this will go through and. Manually close up a lot of these small holes theres still some manual work were going to want to do. But this is a good way to get started this process can take a minute so were just going to. Jump cut until when its finished so after running the inspector tool we can see the model looks better already. A lot of those small holes have been filled but we still want to go back and before we run.
Our final smoothing operation its not a bad idea to just go and clean up a couple areas and so. What were going to do is go through and look for some of the areas that have bumps and flatten. Them out just a little bit so thats going to smooth down a little bit easier one of the larger. Holes on this model was directly under the chin so we want to spend a little bit of time here. And you know depending on how much time you want to put into the model you can either you know.
Spend a good bit of time reconstructing this or just doing what im gonna do which is were just gonna. Go through and try and clean up that border just a little bit to make it look a little bit. Smoother its not a perfect fix but it is a quick way to get the model to a better place. So once we finish with that process weve got a smoothed out area here i am definitely not a sculptor. So this can be done a lot better and especially if you have a little bit more time to dedicate.
To it so once we get to this point the model is looking pretty good we can do any last. Detailing we want to do before we run the smooth and so im going to go through and just add. A little bit of im going to use the flatten brush just to sort of help highlight some of these. Areas where i want to separate you know the cat from the base and also some of the features of. The cat as well so theres a few different ways you can do this and again depending on how accurate.
You want your model to be you can spend more or less time on this process so once were finished. Manually sculpting the model its time to run our final smoothing and to do that we are going to select. The entire model and then go to deform smooth heres our smooth model and meshmixer did a great job of. Going through and removing a lot of that graininess while overall preserving the shape of the model so once we. Get to this point this is a pretty good place to hit accept and thatll give us our smooth model.
From here im going to run one more plane cut and the idea is to give us a nice flat. Base with no curling on the outer edges so when we click accept thats going to give us our final. Model so now we have a model thats been smoothed out has a flat base and its ready for 3d. Printing so from here were going to export the stl file bring it into our slicing software and send it. To the printer so heres the cat in our slicing software im going to be printing this out on my.
Minga d2 and im using prusa slicer to generate the g-code and i can also do a quick tool path. Preview go through the model to make sure theres no last-minute issues the only thing i see here is some. Overhang on the chin so well see how that comes out other than that this file is ready to go. And now we have our 3d printed copy this workflow from scandi pro to meshmixer to 3d printer is pretty. Easy and i think its fairly accessible even for beginners scandi pro offers a free version which allows you to.
Save one file per day if you want to do more than that they offer a weekly monthly and annual. Subscription plan i think the price is pretty reasonable given the overall quality of the scan id love to hear. Method 3 – Halloween Special- How To Use The Iphone 13 Pro Max As A 3D Object Scanner For 3D Printing A Skull
Hey everybody today were going to do something interesting i hope ive been experimenting with a bunch of 3d scanning. Apps i upgraded from my iphone 11 to the iphone 13 not that i was displeased with the iphone 11. Its just that the iphone 13 on this is the pro max has a rear facing lidar camera which makes. For improved 3d scans uh in the previous version that i had in the 11 only the front facing camera.
Which is used for face id had lidar which is the technology used to kind of create a 3d topology. Of your face in order to make a face id print for your face now that they have that on. The rear facing camera i wanted to see how that goes as far as the possibility for using the camera. As a 3d scanning tool okay so hopefully you can see this ive grabbed a whole pile of 3d scanning. Apps and you can see sort of the names of some of them here the one were going to be.
Looking at today in particular is called meta scan and they just came out with a new feature this week. So im going to click it and right now theres nothing in there now theres two modes here lidar scanning. In general is interesting because and you can see here that down the bottom theres lidar mode and photo mode. And were going to talk about the difference between those two lidar mode is for really large scale capturing when. Youre talking about these types of scanning tools because it doesnt do very well with close up detail and its.
Really trying to capture broad set of information around the environment so for example if i try to scan try. To scan my skully here you can see im getting my skull but im also getting and you have to. Move you have to move around and as youre moving around youre running the risk of grabbing more and more. Information all around the room lets say and it works there are a few of these types of tools available. But you can see ive got half my house captured in this and what i really want is just my.
Scully so you can see ive got a lot more than just the skull captured here hes in there somewhere. And now i havent finished the post processing this is just the initial capture but you can see that ive. Got all these artifacts and yeah you can get in there and crop all this out and other things but. I wanted to try the this new feature im just going to delete that theres a new feature called photo. Mode now photo mode is interesting because photo mode actually takes still images you have to take 20 still images.
I have to think about how am i going to take 20 images now it works for a lot of. Uh setups and if you have a 3d scanning setup already a lot of times what you have is sort. Of your scanning device or phone at a fixed position you sort of rotate the object around take a picture. Take a picture take a picture and then you have your 3d scanning object so im going to try to. Create that here with this lazy susan i got from a thrift store for i dont know pennies probably that.
I just spray painted black and i have one of these cloth tapes for fabric measured around the circumference here. And if you do that im not going to do it now because but in it i went around like. This boom spices to say its 44 inches 44 divided by 20 is 2.2 which is just about two and. A quarter inches now what i propose to do is every two and a quarter ish inches or so just. Put a little piece of just blue tape on this and then i should have all of my locations to.
Rotate this and stop it at even positions lets see if we can use the iphone 13 pro max and. This meta scan tool with photo mode to get ourselves an interesting skull model i do not have a second. Tripod so youll have to excuse any camera shakiness i did mark off 20 locations roughly two and a quarter. Inches apiece im just going to line up this blue marker with my tripod its kind of lousy i cant. Really see what im taking a picture of but okay and now what im going to do is take a.
Snap turn take a snap now well say done we see all of our snapshots the option i used was. Full detail and object masking so first it doesnt upload and then it does a processing step and well see. What happens what the app really wants you to do is to make a few passes around the object at. Different heights what you need to do is get a pass all the way around low move the camera up. Take another pass i did 20 20 and a few youre gonna want to get all the way around youre.
Next im gonna 3d scan you yeah and get all the way around so that you have a full sort. Of picture itll especially help in areas like this where this is sort of see-through youre going to want to. Make sure you get a nice view all the way around the object of different heights including top i guess. You cant really get bottom but uh but then we can bring it into like a 3d program and clean. It up so im going to do that with my phone i just wanted you to see what im doing.
Because you cant really see it very well if i get my cat to sit on this then i would. Scan him huh yeah all right here we go all right everybody so using the technique i described where you. Want to take some circular images from different planes and make sure you get a nice top view ah heres. Another thing i think thatll be maybe handy if youre going to try to set up some type of tooling. To be able to repeat this its fine to do it once you can probably just take your phone and.
You know take your phone and uh you know move the object snap snap snap its fine if youre doing. It once if youre looking to do this in a semi regular way not only did i find these tape. Markers very helpful but i would advocate that you should use alternating colors and ill tell you why the the. 20 granularity is probably important for some of your earlier scans so down here when youre down low and youre. Scanning youre probably going to want to have very small incremental changes to get all of this information however once.
Youre up here what i did was i went with every other marker and did 10 scans instead of 20. And then when i got to the top i just made sure i did a full top view i think. I had a total of around 65 images mojos very interested in this process or maybe uninterested in this process. Hey are you paying attention im trying to teach you something what the result is boom can you see that. This i think came out pretty cool looks almost like the real thing there should be a sort of hollow.
Point here i might have to clean that up in like mesh mixer or blender or something but that is. Some really excellent detail that it captured especially all the surface and veining and things i mean this is pretty. Good for 20 bucks a year i think this tool is definitely one of the leading tools that ive tried. Can i export as i can export as an obj uh it says fbx is used by most 3d software. All of the exports you have to upgrade to pro except for usdz which is used by apple devices so.
Maybe if you have another tool ill check i havent tried to import a usdz file into blender or meshmixer. Ive used objs and stls so it seems like of course they want you to upgrade to pro its 20. Bucks for the year i think thats pretty reasonable theres also a monthly subscription which is 6.99 a month or. 20 dollars for the year its not its definitely a cost advantage to do the annual for sure because 6.99. A month is three months worth and youll have paid for the year so metascan im kind of digging it.
I hope that helps someone im going to try to get this into an export and then see if i. Can get it into a 3d tool either blender or mesh mixer see if i can clean this up and. Print this out obviously i already have one of these i dont really need another one but ill maybe ill. Print its cousin and well see how that goes okay everybody here we are and i did i was able. To bring this into blender and do some cleanup and ill ill cover the steps so there is supposedly a.
Plug-in that seems to work best on a mac for blender and itll let you import usdz files now i. Did download that plug-in and theres some steps to get the plug-in its on github i think and then you. Can just grab it and install it and i did all those steps on windows tried to use it it. Gave the appearance of working and it did even have a object over here that said uh the name of. My object and sometimes these imports will import something so tiny that you have to select it and scale it.
Up sort of many times the size i i tried that i just could not get that import plug-in to. Work now im using windows i hear people have much better success with it on a mac so i wanted. To seek an alternative because it didnt seem to be working for me what i did was i found this. Free site that converts usd z to sdl ill ill add this link in the description and i just simply. Took my usdz file added it here converted it downloaded it imported it to blender as an stl file now.
There was a considerable amount of some of the bottom here and i just converted this to just converted this. To a mesh and then simply just highlighted pieces youll want probably to be in x-ray mode so you can. Actually like select all the way through the model and then i just deleted all the chunks that i did. Not want and clean up the model once i got it cleaned up i took it back over to i. Exported it back to an stl file and then i brought it over to meshmixer i simply used mesh mixer.
To close up this big hole in the bottom and make the object solid so you go into mesh mixer. You click it uh one of the modification tools is just simply called make solid except it accepted the defaults. And then it made my model solid and so then brought it into cura sliced it i think you know. The drill from there and i printed it so after i did that i ended up with my final model. Which ill show you and here we are i would say that is a pretty successful representation of the two.
Items here and and uh you can ill give this get this little closer so you can check it out. I used a new pla that is a wood has some wood in it and pretty pleased with how it. Came out it gives it a nice sort of textured look doesnt make it look sort of like shiny plastic. It almost feels like a almost feels like cardboard kind of uh but it does have a does have a. Texture to it so but anyway not too bad considering considering we scanned this in with the phone and then.
Pulled it into a few different pieces of software do you need more light on this i think they came. Out all right so hopefully this will help someone if you want to do your own scan and like i. Said i i was trying to set something up that was a repeatable process not kind of a one-off which. Is why i um set up this turntable and wanted to have something that i could place an object on. And and do this for a number of different objects yeah and im pretty pleased with how that came out.
Like i said the software that i used metascan uh at least its available on ios it did take me. A couple of tries to get used to the software but here we are im pretty pleased with this little. With this little skull i think it came out awesome i did print it this with a couple of small. Tree supports but i think i used 80 for the for the threshold for supports so it had a little. Support on the teeth some supports on the cheeks but i did not need to support the eyes or nose.

Whats up guys so today were doing a 3d scan tech comparison using the iphone 13 pro max and its. Dedicated lidar scanner and front-facing 3d sensors versus a dedicated 3d scanner the newly released revo point pop 2 which. Is packed with some cool new tech and accessories and were going to see what this thing is capable of. And if the iphone can keep up using its own apple software as well as some third-party applications now there.
Are obviously certain differences in the way these two devices are set up for their main objectives so the revo. Point pop 2 uses four different sensors an rgb and projector sensor in the middle and two ir sensors on. The side to improve details and give more accurate scans it also comes with some nice accessories in the box. That allows you to have a standard 3d scanner desktop setup using your pc or mac as well as a. Handy dedicated portable mode using your smartphone with support on both android and ios the iphone 13 pro max with.
Its dedicated lidar scanner alongside the main camera which together can be used in third-party apps for 3d scanning and. Measuring the front notch also contains face id sensors with an infrared dot projector and depth sensor that third party. Apps have also tried to utilize for face scanning so i think the first thing most people will do when. They get one of these scanners is scan the thing they want to see the most which is their own. Face so were going to try and make a 3d model of my face that could potentially be sent to.
A 3d printer to make a statue of myself or perhaps use the scan to insert myself as a mod. Into a computer game as a playable character so for the iphone were going to try both the 3d sensors. On the front notch and the lidar and cameras on the back using two different third-party apps to test both. Sides of the hardware for the revo point pop 2 we can use its accessories to make it portable using. Its tripod power bank that the pop 2 can slide into charge and then connect to your android or ios.

Video the revo point smartphone app is still in beta so it is missing some of the features such as. The high quality scan mode and texture meshing but by the time you watch this video that high detailed scanning. Feature will be available and later i will show you the pc version which is out of beta so well. See this thing in full beam scanning mode in super high quality but for now i think this will make.
It more interesting against the iphone so for the iphone im going to use capture a free app that involves. Using the iphones front-facing sensors it creates a purple mesh that looks pretty cool and obviously you can see that. Its picking up my head and body shape pretty well wrapping the mesh around my face and shoulders to create. A 3d model now the scan doesnt actually last that long around 50 seconds and the result well its got. The basic parts down but it has misaligned a few of my features most prominently my nose and although it.
Is a little bit bent in real life it hasnt scanned properly here and is missing details in the textures. Which is already very soft and unfortunately there is no way to view the actual 3d render without the texture. So were going to try out the lidar scanner in just a moment but first lets use the revo point. Pop 2 in its portable mode the app helps you in real time keep the correct distance from the subject. As well as giving you controls over the exposure and ir sensors the pop 2 has an inbuilt gyroscope for.
This handheld mode to balance hardware moving along with the software as well as a safe infrared invisible light which. Is eye-friendly and non-irritating and after the scan is completed its uploaded using cloud-based technology to process everything and give. You the final result which is pretty good compared to the iphones 3d sensor the textures are more detailed its. Not blurred and there is no morphing of my facial features but the outside texture wrapping is actually not that. Important compared to the real main 3d data underneath this is the most important part and here we see the.
Structure of my face is very lifelike from the bags under my eyes the shape of my lips and even. The structure of my ears is just so accurate and remember this is the low quality setting although i do. Wish i picked a better facial expression now trineo is a paid iphone app which uses the lidar sensor and. The iphones main camera sensor to find and record different points on your face using apples ar kit and allows. For a much longer scan and processing time than the previous app we used like the pop 2 it also.
Uses cloud-based algorithms to put the model together and the texture results are fantastic i mean truly much better than. I was expecting so much detail is picked up on my skin and hair which is great but if you. Strip it down to the real valuable 3d data underneath its less impressive with a very basic shape to my. Face and features perhaps like a computer game from 10 years ago you can certainly tell its me but my. Features are lacking in depth detail and are much less defined compared to the low quality scan on the pop.
2 and there are also lots of random artifacts and dots blotted around that you would have to clean up. In post edit so next lets go full beast mode with the revo point 2 and scan some objects using. Its full quality scanning mode on pc and to make the scan even more accurate the pop 2 has a. Rotating stand that is covered in mapping points so you dont even have to move the scanner while its in. Motion and before you scan you can choose a specific scanning mode like faces features body dark hair and more.
As well as color or black and white scans so ive chosen feature mode in full color and at the. Highest quality and were going to scan this miniature statue which i have placed on the stand and as we. Begin scanning you can see the frame rate going up the system is quickly obtaining high precision 3d point cloud. Data at 10 frames a second with the highest single frame accuracy being 0.1 millimeters which is incredible so as. We finish the scan we can actually change the position of the object to gain more data from another angle.
And the software will automatically recognize the change adjust the position placing the previous scan position over the new position. Like magic which is really cool so now the scan is completed its processing in the cloud and here is. The final texture version which looks pretty good but there is a few hulls and dots missed and we can. Just mesh the spots together using the revo point software to get a fuller picture and it looks great but. It is only when we remove the texture and see the raw 3d data in its true form that you.
Can see how accurate this scan is from every angle i could go out and 3d print this right now. Or add it as an item in a computer game in its current form but the best part is when. We adjust the lighting to really show how the depth and accuracy has been captured really really impressive here from. The pop 2. So lets try the iphone now using the treneo app and i did try using the riverpoint.
