Method 2 – Windows Command Line Tutorial – 1 – Introduction To The Command Prompt

What is going on everyone welcome back to another tutorial series in this video series im going to be showing. You guys how to use the windows command line all the cool things that you can do with it all. The different tools and tips and its going to be awesome so well lets just go ahead and get started. So first things first how the heck do you open the command line well what you can do is you.

Can go to this start menu down here and you can just type cmd in hit enter in boom roasted. Look at that or if you dont feel like moving your mouse what you can do is you can actually. Just hit the windows key on your keyboard just like that you can type cmd hit enter and look at. That you never even had to touch your mouse so anyways check this out this is the windows command line. Help you how beautiful looking is this so before you get started learning how to use it how to move.

Around and all the cool things that we can do lets talk about why we would ever want to use. This i mean we already have this awesome graphical interface i mean thats kind of the point of windows so. We dont have to use this command line so why would we even bother with it well actually in a. Lot of cases depending on what youre trying to do the command line is actually faster than using the gui. And whenever i say gui i mean graphical user interface pretty much are all of these cool icons and you.

Know pictures dragging with the mouse so this is called a graphical user interface what you usually use and its. Pretty much the opposite of this old you know outdated looking command line but like i said in a lot. Of cases its faster than using the gui and also there are certain tools and software that are only available. To the command line so for example im going to be showing you guys a program called teach arc later. On and you can only run it from the command line you cant use it you know in a gui.

Type of way so thats pretty cool and a lot of like security and networking tools are also only available. From the command line and yeah in another cool thing the last thing i want to say is later on. Im going to show you guys how to build your own programs and scripts for the command line so enough. For me rambling lets go get started so the first thing youre going to notice is whenever you pop this. Open you have a little indicator and this is called the current working directory its basically where you are on.

Your computer so let me open up just this old windows explorer and ill show you guys the equivalent of. It so right now it says im in see users bucky so my main hard drive in a directory called. Users and the user i am is bucky so this is where im at right now now if youre just. Using this windows explorer in order to move around to a new directory you just find one and double click. It like this say i wanted to move in my desktop double click that easy stuff now if i ever.

Want to go back ill just click this back button or i can click up here however in our command. Line we dont have that luxury we dont have anything to click except this big black background so how would. We move into the desktop well any time you want to change your directories you type the keyword cd that. Means change directory so from here remember we can just go desktop and hit enter and that means i want. To change or go into my desktop and look at that so now we are basically in the desktop so.

Now we can run whatever tools and you know make files from here make directories whatever we want to do. Now youre thinking ah right well how do we get back because in windows explorer you can either click this. Right here or has a big old back button with the command line we dont have that back button so. Any time you want to go back or up a directory what you do is youre a cd and instead. Of back or anything like that you write dot dot this means take me to the parent directory so if.

You see my path is see users bucky desktop so its pretty much going to bump us back into bucky. Right there pretty cool now you know how i said that anytime you want to change a directory you pretty. Much write cd and then the name where you want to move in – well youre not only limited to. Move one step at a time you can actually move multiple steps so you see like in this windows explorer. If you want to get to a file or folder inside my desktop you click desktop and then i dont.

Know maybe you want to go into videos two clicks so from here we can actually do is this type. Desktop and then backslash and then videos so hit enter and boom look lad so we already see that whenever. You use this it only takes one step typing in one path rather than two clicks so thats pretty cool. And now if you guys are like alright well what if i want to go back two steps so i. Want to go back in the desktop and then back into buckey what what you do is cd dot this.

Is going to take you up one however if you do forward slash dot again this means take me back. To directories so look at that so thats the basics of how to navigate around and ill show you guys. Something else thats pretty cool so if we are just in bucky right now you see that we have um. Lets say that we want to go to downloads so what we can do is we can actually type cd. And then we can start typing the word downloads but see im lazy and i dont feel like typing in.

The entire word because its going to take half a second and i got stuff to do so instead what. You can do is you can actually hit tab on your keyboard now what hitting tab does is it pretty. Much tries to autocomplete it so since i take d it said okay you want to change to a directory. But i have two of them that start with d desktop in downloads so im going to hit tab and. Its going to fill in whatever it thinks im at first it just looks at alphabetical order the first directory.

That starts with d now if it doesnt get the right one then i can hit tab again and boom. Look at that so pretty much use tab whenever you want to autocomplete and if theres only one gah let. Me do this see the desktop with ocd videos so i only have one directory that starts with v on. My desktop so its just going to give me videos by default but again use tab to autocomplete and save. You some time and it doesnt only save you time but it also helps with typos since you know you.

Might actually accidentally spell videos like that i mean you probably wouldnt but its pretty much saves you time and. Helps with typos so there you go so that is your real quick introduction to the windows command line im. Sure you guys are thrilled already you know if youre like alright so i can move directories wow this thing. Is useless well wait to like 5 tutorials from now you guys are going to see just how awesome it. Is so thank guys for watching and i will see you guys next time.

Method 3 – How To Open A File From The Command Prompt In Windows 10

Hello everyone how are you doing this is mdtech here with another quick tutorial in todays determine how do you. Open up a file through the command prompt or command line window so its gonna be appreciate for process here. Without further ado lets go ahead and jumping into it so if you know the path of the file so. If youre unsure you can always open a file explorer here and go ahead and navigate over to whatever directory.

Youre looking for so you do this pc you can do local disk and then users whatnot just go through. There and once you have the exact path that you were following here just minimize here im gonna go ahead. And open up the start menu type in command prompt im gonna run as administrator but you dont need to. And youre just going to type in whatever drive letter windows is installed on or whatever file are trying to. Run followed by a colon youre gonna do a forward slash here now im going to type in users then.

Im gonna do another forward slash gonna go back to my file explorer here just to follow along im gonna. Type in my username here so mdtech and then im gonna do another forward slash now i should say back. Slash it doesnt really matter but its gonna be back slash theyre all back slashes so far so were gonna. Go double hook on that now lets say i want to run this image on my desktop so im going. To just type in desktop next part of our path here and im gonna do another backslash and since the.

File name is called image so im going to type in image dot and now youre going to type in. The file extension name so its a png file so weve done shared the file extension type you always right-click. On the f file and then select the properties and it will tell you what type of file it is. So dot png so im going to type that in so dot png again this will completely depend on your. Individual circumstance im going to show you guys that you can run a file from the command prompt once you.

Have the path correctly typed in here you can also copy the path too so if you went over here. And just selected the path on file or you go ahead and right click and copy on that too but. If youd rather just type it out like i did youre welcome to do that as well you want hit. Enter in keyboard once you have it run and what would you know it looks like its opened up and. So i go up to this brief tutorial was able to help you guys out and as always thank you.

For watching and i do look forward to catching you all in the next tutorial goodbye.

Method 4 – How To Access Command Prompt W

Welcome to new video guys so today im gonna be showing you guys how to access command prompt on your. School computer or really any computer that requires admin access for you to run command prompt so before we begin. Guys my first computer tutorial that i did on this channel it somehow reached 4,000 views and it was only. Like my first computer tutorials so im gonna keep continuing these every once in a while because i think theyre.

Theyre pretty cool and i think these can help you guys out also i didnt figure this out on my. Own so my friend kyle showed me how to do this so kyle if you were watching this thank you. The reason this video is possible was because of kyle i never knew about this until he showed me also. Guys in this tutorial im gonna be using dot bat files so if you cant run those with like your. Admin controlled computer or your school computer then theres gonna be an issue i dont think youll be able to.

Do this so for those of you who cant run dot bat files i dont think this will work for. You properly but yeah you can maybe find another thing online or something i dont know maybe this could work. I have no clue okay guys so lets get into the tutorial the first thing youre gonna want to do. Is right-click on your desktop here and go to new and then create a text document now we dont name. It anything right now so were just going to open it up here and we need to type a couple.

Things in okay so these couple things will always be in the description guys as you probably know just type. These in in your text document and its really that simple okay guys so the first thing were going to. Want to type is set space underscore underscore comp @ underscore layer equals run as invoker so this looks really. Similar to the how to get a steam on school computers one i did i want the month or so. Ago its basically the same concept so then next line youre going to win a type start space one thats.

Simple guys so now we needed to save our file okay guys so for some reason i forgot to say. This but make sure you save it as a dot bat file so when you go to save your text. Document make sure you do whatever youre going to want to name it and then dot bat because thats very. Important or else it wont work and then im just going to save this to my desktop here okay so. Now you can exit out of that and the next thing youre going to want to do is right-click your.

Desktop again and then create another text document now dont name it anything again youre going to want to open. This up here and youre going to type in something again this will be in the description down below you. Can just copy and paste it so youre going to type eko space off and then cls and then title. Batch or batch cc prompt and then % cd % color 0 a cls : Cmd set /p space quote. Cmd equals percent cd percent and then greater than no yea greater than sign and then you just want to.

Type another quotation here and then next line % cmd % and then echo dot and then for the last. One its going to be go to cmd so once you have that guys youre going to want to save. This again so youre going to want to save as here and then youre gonna want to title this like. To be 80 or so if this loads real quick i dont know why its taking forever there you go. So title this too and then dot b8c dont forget the dot be a 2 so then save this and.

Then its going to show up here great so now we have our command prompt here now we can i. Dont know like why these are still here we dont need them so once we have these two things guys. I were ready to go pretty much youre gonna want to open number two do not open number one because. This will happen yeah yep no not good not good not good not good not good so dont type dont. Hit number one thats not the one you want and want to do so click number two double click and.

There we go guys we were in command prompt and it doesnt require any admin access or anything of anything. Like that its that easy guys its a really simple tutorial its a really simple trick to do and then. Yeah you can start typing in different commands and stuff so thats basically it guys thats literally all you have. To do so hopefully you guys enjoyed this video and if you did be sure to leave a like and. Method 5 – 15 Command Prompt Secrets And Tricks In Windows

Hows it going guys im theojo and today were going to be taking a look at the good old command. Prompt in windows and you may know this is a very useful tool but there are a lot of features. That are pretty much unknown and dare i say are secret features that make it even more useful now this. Is going to be in windows 10 particularly thats what im using but a lot of these are going to.

Carry over in previous versions as well ive got about 15 of these so lets get started first up is. The ability to actually customize the prompt text itself so when you know when you start command prompt it probably. Says the path of the current folder youre in like c and then either the user directory or maybe system32. If youre running as an administrator but you can actually customize any of that text to say whatever you want. And you do this for example by typing in the prompt command so you do prompt and then whatever text.

You want and now that will be the text that shows up before whatever command you type in so you. Can type in prompt hello and now it will say hello and then you type the commands after that obviously. Having just some random word there is not really going to be very useful so you can actually use the. Command prompt and then space slash question mark to show special codes that you can use to not just have. Words but also dynamic information there as well such as a timestamp or the version of windows and stuff like.

That so for example maybe we dont want it to just show the file path but we also want to. Have it as a time stamp so if youre looking at a log later down the road you know exactly. When these commands are run so to do this you can look at the special codes and what we would. Want to type in is prompt to say were going to change this then we would use the command dollar. Sign t which is the current time stamp code and then were going to do a space and then dollar.

Sign b as a vertical line and were just kind of formatting at this point another space and then were. Going to use the dollar sign p command which will show the current path just like it usually does and. Then we want to put that right arrow carrot thing so were going to use the dollar sign g command. To show the greater sign so you can see after we do that it now shows the time stamp and. Then the divider line and then the file path like it did before so a little bit more useful also.

If you ever mess it up and you want to go back you can simply revert to the default by. Typing in prompt and nothing after that and it will automatically go back so you could also use this as. Some sort of prank if you want to mess with your friends you could have it say catastrophic error or. Something like that and then they wont know whats wrong with it might be kind of funny as long as. You know how to put it back one thing to keep in mind though is that when you use this.

Command it will actually reset once you restart the command prompt if you wanted to have that by default and. Always show your customized one when you start command prompt you have to do a quick registry edit now im. Going to show you how to do that but as usual if you are not experienced with the registry editor. At all be very careful and maybe even avoid this trick because messing with that registry and deleting something could. Literally ruin your entire version of windows and youll have to reinstall it so just be very careful here so.

What you do is you open up the registry editor and you need to find the key thats under computer. H key current user then software then microsoft and then command processor now on the right side after you enter. That little folder youre going to right click youre going to create new and then string value and you want. To name this auto run and after you create that youre going to right click on that key that you. Just made the autorun one and click modify and then where it says value data youre going to type in.

Whatever command you want to auto run as command prompt starts up so in this case if we want the. Prompt command to always have a certain format that we customize like the one we just made oh yeah all. We have to do is paste in that timestamp prompt code that we created before and now you can see. When we start up command prompt it now automatically shows that customized prompt there and this doesnt just have to. Be the prompt command you could have this as any command you want to run automatically when you start command.

Prompt so use it wisely all right up next this is another kind of useful one so instead of customizing. The prompt maybe you want to customize the title that shows up in the title bar of the command prompt. And to do that you just type in title and then whatever text you want and again this will reset. After you close the command prompt but if you want you can put it in that auto run command in. The registry and it will change it permanently okay moving on this is kind of two and you might know.

These already but first of all is the help command im sure you know about this one you just type. In help and then it will basically list a bunch of very common command prompt commands that you can choose. From but you can also access help by typing in any command and then typing space and then a slash. Question mark and i showed this in the previous one we did and that will actually bring up a bunch. Of information about that command and this doesnt necessarily have to be one of the commands thats built in to.

Command prompt for example you could have one thats like sfc system file checker and thats not going to appear. When you type in help but you can still use the slash question mark command to show information about it. Such as the syntax some arguments or parameters in it that sort of thing all right up next we have. A couple that were going to combine together and that is how you can access previous commands that you might. Have typed in and you want to either repeat these or to see what you typed in before the first.

Of which is simply using the arrow keys if you use the up and down arrow keys it will scroll. Through previous commands you did and paste them so you can just press enter again to do it again you. Can also get a list of previous commands you typed in in that instance since youve started command prompt by. Typing in das key space slash history and it will output a list of all commands youve recently typed in. And finally another good shortcut is simply pressing f7 and this will actually bring up not only a list of.

Previous commands but itll also let you select them directly and then press enter and then it will paste it. So if you dont have to keep scrolling through using the arrow keys you can just select it right there. Pretty useful all right up next this is a useful one if you want to have multiple commands executed on. The same line so you can do this by typing in two ampersands or and signs between the commands so. Say we want to customize the title and the prompt at the same time you could type in prompt whatever.

Text you want and then the two and signs and then the title command whatever you want when you hit. Enter itll do both at the same time and you can also use this when youre doing that registry auto. Run command if you want to have it execute multiple things you can combine them with the ampersand and itll. Do it all at once all right moving on this is definitely a useful one which allows you to put. The output of a command onto the clipboard so if you know that youre going to be copying the command.

Or you already executed it and you want to go back and copy it this time youd simply type in. The command and then a space and then a vertical line and then another space and then type clip after. The command so itll look like this and then now when you execute that command itll be copied to the. Clipboard and you can paste it on a forum if youre asking for help into a text document whatever you. Want related to this the next one is that you can actually output an output to a file not just.

The clipboard and you do this by using the greater than sign which is the right arrow and then a. Space and then the name of the file so test dot text or whatever and then it will output that. To a text file which is located in your default library folder for that user so c users joe or. Whatever keep in mind if that file already exists it will actually overwrite that file but if you want to. Append the text results onto the file so maybe you already have a file.text and you want to add the.

Results onto that you can use two greater than signs and it will simply append the results to the end. Of it for both of these commands if you want you can specify the file location so it doesnt just. Go to the default one and thats simply by doing the greater than sign and then typing out the entire. File path and then itll go to that file location all right this next one is a very simple shortcut. And that is control c now normally if youre in windows this always does a copy command but in command.

Prompt its special and it actually aborts the currently running program or command so if youre running something and its. Taken too long or you didnt mean to run it and its kind of frozen you can press control c. And it should abort that command and then bring you the prompt again so if control c doesnt do a. Copy and paste how do you do a copy and paste well thats the next tip and that is at. Least in windows 10 and i think eight as well you actually highlight whatever you want in the command prompt.

And then to copy you actually right click and then itll unselect but now that text will be on the. Clipboard and to paste you just do control v again like normally would and it will paste it all right. These next couple are definitely super useful and that is how you can easily open the command prompt to any. Path you want without having to type in the change directory command and then typing it all out the first. Is when youre in any explorer window to open the command prompt to that location you can simply click in.

The path at the top so itll show your location c whatever you can click on that and type cmd. And now will open automatically the command prompt to that location also you may not know this but if you. Have the command prompt window open you can actually drag and drop any folder or file in the command prompt. Window and it will automatically paste that file path so if you want to quickly change the directory you could. Also type in cd space and then drag it in and itll do that or if you want to execute.

A command onto a certain folder you can type the command and then when youre ready to type in the. Path you drag it on and itll do it for you now these next few arent really secrets but theyre. Very useful tools that you may still not have known about the first of which is the system file checker. And you use this command by typing sfc and typically the one you want to do is sfc space slash. Scan now and this will actually check all the windows files for anything thats corrupted so this is very useful.

If windows is misbehaving or complains about file errors or corrupted files this is usually the first thing you want. To do and it will automatically repair anything that it finds now this isnt a foolproof way of always fixing. Anything but its definitely something thats easy to try first and if you want to know more commands with this. You can again use that slash question mark and itll show you a bunch of other syntax commands and parameters. If you want to check them out another useful one is the ipconfig command so you type in ipconfig and.

It will bring up a bunch of information about all your network adapters and you can also type in ipconfig. Space slash all and itll show you even more information though that might not be useful to you now this. Could be used for a few things if you just want to see quickly like the ip address the local. Ip address of a network adapter itll show you all the network adapters and all their ip addresses all in. One place so this is really useful and itll also show you your internet ip address as well and finally.

This ones definitely not a secret but i should point it out for those of you who dont know about. It and that is the ability to access a whole bunch of different properties and defaults to customize the command. Prompt in general now to get to this theres two ways you can .
