Video is part of a series of synology videos you can see more great synology videos above or below down. In the description for disclosure so knology sent out these products so i could create several tutorials no money has. Exchanged hands though the first way to set up synology nas for remote access is using the quick connect method. Quick connect is built into the de station manager to allow you to connect to your synology nas or without. Needing to know how to set up any complicated network settings plus setting it up is relatively quick and simple.

Firstly log in to your synology nas go to your de station menu button and open control panel here we. Need to choose quick connect next we need to place a tick beside enable quick connect now in order for. Us to continue we need to log in or register a new synology account once youve either registered or logged. In you will need to give you a discussion an easy to remember name in the quick connect id section. Youll also need to agree to the terms and conditions by placing a tick in the box and click apply.

By the way if the name has been taken you will see an alert down the bottom once the quick. Connect id is accepted youll be given a url you can use to connect your synology nas via the internet. Save this url somewhere safe on your phone or another device and youll always have access to your files wherever. You are when you use your quick connect id either from your home or from another location it will automatically. Detect your current location and use the fastest route to your synology nas now for a little bit more control.

Go to the advanced tab up top by default all these options are ticked but if you want to say. Disable mobile applications from having access then simply remove the tick from beside that option under permissions its that simple. To quickly demonstrate simply type the url in the address bar of the browser once loaded you should see a. Login screen use your diskstation username and the password here and once its logged in you will see your synology. Nas from anywhere in the world believe it or not thats as hard as the quick connect option gets definitely.

The quickest solution for remote accessing a synology nas if you happen to encounter an error like you are not. Authorized to use this service you may need to change the security setting simply go back into the dystocia menu. And go to the control panel find the security section on the right hand side and up the top should. Be an option that says enhanced browser compatibility by skipping ip check put a tick here and hit the apply. Button now you should be able to log in without that error the second method you can use is called.

Easy internet to use this service you will need to have a router that supports upnp if easy internet fails. You will have to use the last method discussed later in this video for now though we need to go. To the discussion menu and choose easy internet this will start the wizard that will guide us through the entire. Process on the first screen we need to click next on the firewall setup screen we need to make sure. There is a tick in the enable firewall to block incoming connections box if you just want access to the.

Discussion manager then click next otherwise scroll through the list and place a check beside the services you want to. Have access to once youre done you will need to set up a hostname by typing it into the box. Beside here you can change the domain name associated with your hostname you choose click on the drop-down box and. Choose the one thats easiest to remember or leave it as the default next you will need to make sure. You are logged into your synology account lastly place a tick in the terms and conditions box and click next.

Check the settings written here are correct and click the apply button the firewall and d dns settings will now. Be set up once thats done click the finish button and make sure you have written down the domain name. So you can have access to your synology nas if for some reason the link is coming back with an. Error your router may not be compatible and while all settings may not have taken effect to check this go. To the discussion menu and choose the control panel select the external access icon and go to the router configuration.

Tab up the top here we need to click on the setup router button this will go through some tests. Before finishing and displaying a message if it says no upnp router found then we will need to go through. With the third method port forwarding is the final method of accessing a synology nas via the internet before we. Start though we need to make sure that so knology nas has its gateway setup with the ip address of. The router to check this we need to go to the de station menu and choose control panel here we.

Need to choose network beside default gateway click on the edit button and make sure the ip address is your. Router if not you may need to manually configure dns server on the network screen please be aware if you. Dont know what youre doing here you could lose access to your node so this is at your own risk. Next you will need to log into your routers web interface to configure the ports that need to be open. For access every router is different so this will need to be something you check with your particular routers manual.

The link on the screen now or in the description below will give you a list of ports that allow. Access to different features of the salalah genus once you have set up your router with the correct ports we. Can set up ddns hostname for access on the synology nas web interface go to the dystocia menu and choose. Control panel next we need to choose external access and then under d dns tab we need to choose the. Add button youll see a huge drop down menu of different dynamic dns providers youll need to have set up.

An account with a provider to use their service heres a few on the screen now that provide free dynamic. Dns services choose one that suits your needs sign up via the website first and then input all your details. On the d dns page click on the test connection button to make sure everything is communicating correctly and once. Youre done click the ok button now youve manually set up port forwarding and have access to your synology nas. Using remote access over the internet how awesome is that ive got a couple of great synology videos coming soon.

Like a secure off-site backup to another synology nas and load balancing using in salalah g router so make sure. Little bit sick duff gardens.

Method 3 – How To Access A Synology Nas Remotely With Ddns (Tutorial)

Hey everyone today were going to take a look at how you can access your synology nas remotely using ddns. So synology gives you a free dns host name and thats what were going to be looking at today now. Well first take a look at exactly what the ddns hostname does and then well take a look at how. You can set it up and a little later well look at how you can access your nest using that.

Ddns hostname so before we get started i just want to mention that i have full written instructions for everything. In the description of the video so ddns stands for dynamic dns and what this does is it tracks your. External ip address by a domain name so synology will give you a free domain name and what youre doing. Is you are setting it up in a way that any time your external ip address changes it will go. Through and it will update that domain so when your ip address changes its because you have a dynamic ip.

Address and when your ip address stays the same you have a static ip address so if youre lucky enough. Or you paid for it to have a static ip address then a lot of what were doing at this. Point might not be necessary the reason for that is because when you try and connect remotely which well get. To a little later in the video you might be able to use that static ip address the one caveat. To that is that if you need to get a lets encrypt uh certificate you will need a domain name.

So were quickly going to look at the ddns host name setup now and then were going to move on. To the accessing remotely so the first thing that you need to do is make sure that you have a. Synology account so open up the control panel and then go to synology account this is in dsm 7 and. Then youre going to have to sign in or create a new synology account now its very important to highlight. Here that you dont necessarily have to use synology as your ddns provider you can use duck dns i have.

A video ill leave a pop-up for that now you can use various other providers all its doing is its. Just tracking your external ip address so if you want to use synology this is in my opinion the easiest. Way to do it if you have a synology nest but if you dont want to set up a synology. Account for whatever reason you can go through and set it up with a different provider so once youve created. Or logged into your synology account go to external access select ddns and then select add at this point you.

Can select the service provider as synology and then youre going to have to give yourself a unique host name. So this is going to be whatever youll use to access your external ip address after that you can select. The synology dot me drop down menu and this is going to be whatever domain you want to use so. Synology has etc theres tons of them here so youll select whichever one that you want to. Use then you can enter in your email address now under that external address the ipv4 one you will see.

Your external ip address there if your isp is using ipv6 youll see it there as well however if you. Have an ipv4 address thats fine the next thing that youre going to do is youre going to test the. Connection it should return back as normal assuming that it does you can move on to these next two check. Boxes so the first is get a certificate from lets encrypt so what this does is it will go out. And it will get a certificate for your ddns hostname now if you intend on getting a certificate for this.

Hostname at a later time id actually suggest you do it right now the reason for that is because when. You go to do a a certificate renewal the renewal will be done through dns so you will not have. To open ports 80 or 443 in order to have that done if you just go through and you set. Up a regular lets encrypt certificate you will have to open those ports in order for lets encrypt to validate. It so this is actually my preferred approach because at this point if youre just using it for internal access.

Or youre just using it for vpn or something like that but you want to use that certificate for something. Else you wont have to go through and open those ports to renew the certificate it will automatically be done. Through dns so the last setting there is enable heartbeat and if you leave this as selected what its going. To do is it will test that connection to ensure that it is up and for whatever reason if its. Down you will get an email informing you that its down so when ive had power outages in my area.

Or my isp ive lost internet connection ive received emails informing me that the connection has been lost so its. Actually very helpful if you are outside of your house because if you receive that email theres a good chance. That theres an internet issue or a power issue or something could be wrong with your nest as well but. Youll at least be informed that the connection has been lost so if you selected the lets encrypt certificate youre. Going to get a pop-up at this point after you select ok that is informing you that the default certificate.

Is going to change so if youre using other services youll have to go through and basically re-link those certificates. To be the new certificate so well take a look at that now but i want to be clear that. Theres a good chance if youre not exposing any surfaces on your nest and accessing them by hostname that you. Might not actually have to change any of these settings so assuming that you do you can head over to. The security section in the control panel and then you can select certificate and then settings and at this point.

You will have to relink everything to that new default certificate so other than that at this point ddns is. Set up properly so if you go back to that ddns section you should see that the status is reporting. As normal and what that means is that from this point forward if your external ip address changes it will. Update that domain name that or whatever domain you picked it will update that domain name with your latest. External ip address so now that we have that set up there are two main ways that you can access.

Your synology and ask remotely so the first is a vpn server and that is my preference so there are. A few different ways that you can set this up the first is that you can set it up on. A raspberry pi if you want to use wire guard or open vpn its very easy to set up on. A raspberry pi i have tutorials on my site for that but you can use a synology nest as well. And you can set up openvpn on your synology nas so i have a tutorial for that ill leave a.

Pop-up for that now but this is my preferred approach because youll first need a configuration file and youll have. To edit that configuration file with your ddns hostname or if youre lucky enough to have a static ip address. Your static ip address and what youll need to authenticate is youll need that configuration file youll need a username. And a password and youll need all three of those in order to access the vpn server so at that. Point whenever youre outside of your local network you basically turn the the open vpn server on what it will.

Do is it will connect back to your local network and at that point you can access all of your. Resources as if you are on your local network you could take it one step further and set up a. Split tunnel vpn which will ensure that only local traffic is routed through that vpn so if youre going to. Something like google for example it will automatically use your cell phones network for that or whatever network youre on. But if you need to access your nas it will automatically go through and access your nest using the local.

Ip address so thats my preferred approach with that said there are many circumstances why someone might want to go. Through either by the dsm port or by a reverse proxy server both of those are perfectly acceptable options at. The end of the day my overall suggestion is to understand each process and i tried to break that up. As best as i can in my video on how to secure synology nas ill leave a pop-up for that. Now but i also have an article for that so ill leave that in the description box too the reason.

Im saying this is because there are reasons why you might want to access your nas directly outside of something. Like a vpn its hard for me to tell you that everybody should be using a vpn because thats not. Necessarily true but it is important that you understand what youre doing and why youre doing it because if you. Dont you might be exposing your nas in a way that either isnt the safest or isnt the best or. Isnt even how you wanted to do it in the first place so watch that video but if you guys.

Have any questions please feel free to leave them in the comments i will do my best to get back. To you if the video helped you out please give it a thumbs up and please consider subscribing to the. Channel thanks guys.

Method 4 – Synology Connect To Dsm From Anywhere In The World | 4K Tutorial

All right hello everybody this is going to be a quick tutorial on the two different ways that you can. Easily connect back to your synology dsn from anywhere in the world as long as you have internet access so. The two options you have are both pretty straightforward you guys use whats called quick connect which really just allows. You to go in and get the dsm its a little bit slower but does not require any kind of.

Port forwarding or you can use technologies free d dns server it allows you to create your own web address. And simply port forwarding from there so quick connect the nice thing about it does not require any custom router. Settings though if you own your own router theyre very simple but using a d dns server is actually a. Lot faster so depending on what you need to do you can choose their quick connect will always work for. You though just about no matter what your network setting is and it really only slows you down when youre.

Doing big downloads directly from it so if you just go going in to check on your server its probably. The easiest thing to do is just use your quick connect alright so the way were going to start out. Here is were going to just going straight into control panel and for quick connect its right here so yeah. Its incredibly easy to do right here all you have to do is click enable quick connect youre going to. Need a synology account if you dont have one already and then just create a quick connect id and then.

Just simply check box all right its just that simple if you were to have gone to quit connect to. Slash hi guys you would have gotten to my home page and i had to sign in but yeah it. Is just that easy you dont need any port forwarding or any custom settings now lets do a more advanced. Version and gonna go ahead and use whats called ad dns server that stands for something basically whats happening here. Your synology is constantly broadcasting what your global ip address of your nass is to synology comm then whenever user.

Goes to whatever your d dns server name is comm it will automatically say okay that is this address and. Automatically send them to your ip address this means you dont have to have a static ip address because any. Time your address changes at home it will automatically update with everything else its a really great feature that synology. Has and its great for things such as web dav which ill be doing a video on later so if. We go to the top of my browser here and click on this number were going to see that it.

Is my local ip address colon 5,000 thats the http port for your synology generally its defaulted to 5,000 so. Anytime you type in your global ip address if your firewall allows the port 5,000 through you will actually get. Directly to your synology dsn page no additional configuration required how have your isp i think to charge people for. Static ip addresses will randomly change your ip address throughout the year this can be something as often as daily. To every six months in my experience its totally random so you never know what your global ip address is.

And you dont want to constantly have to be looking it up all the time so thats why synology has. Created ad dns server this allows basically your synology to tell the rest of the world what your global ip. Address of your house is this has some security risks but theyre pretty small if you have a good router. If youre going to be doing this i would make sure to go and check what your router reports open. Are every do that every six months because you never know when youre opening something up if you should leave.

It open and you dont want to have holes in your network especially when people can see into it to. Be fair theyre already bought trolling that right now that are just looking at every single ip address and seeing. If it responds back to port 21 and to get a response so they can ssh into maloy and do. Malicious things within the network but most routers lock that down and actually a lot of routers will not even. Let you open it up because its so easy to hack into things so to set up a dv nest.

Server simply go into external access click add select one of the service providers so i know for a fact. Synology is free and make up your hostname i unfortunately cannot do this because ive already got one configured to. My account but once youve done that its really easy to set up so once you set that up now. Were going to have to go ahead and open up the ports 5000 and 5001 5000 is used for an. Unsecure connection i would not recommend doing that in this day and age five thousand and one is used for.

An https connection that is an encrypted traffic so if youve got anything secure on your nass ill honestly just. Use this anyway for anything outside the net alright to make sure that we can use https were going to. First make sure weve got a certificate so nology is actually started automatically giving you a certificate for your nass. As soon as you create it and automatically updating it but lets just go ahead and make sure youve got. An encryption certificate so to do this were going to go into settings security and go into certificate and right.

Here you can see my certificate so that means i will be able to use https security it could give. Some users an error not to use this but you can click around it this is good because even though. Its self signed we we ourselves to know its trusted so the only thing you would really have to worry. About is a man-in-the-middle attack on your specifics technology nass and im gonna go ahead and assume that 99% of. Us are not important enough to have that elaborative attack for just one person so having a self signed certificate.

For something only you are using its really not that big of a deal now now we know weve got. A certificate lets make sure its used so were going to go into network dsm setting and say automatically redirect. Http connections to https basically that says take any unsecure connection and automatically put it to the secured ports so. One thing to note that im going to be doing a little bit differently here is im actually going to. Change my port slightly because ive already got dsm running on my main server using these two ports so im.

Just gonna put it a four thousand four thousand and one for the rest of this video if you see. Four thousand and four thousand and one assume its five thousand or five thousand one all right its a little. Now lets just apply that its gonna take a minute because its currently restarting the web server because we have. Decided to redirect all of the traffic all right so as you can see here its got an error because. Weve currently got a self-signed certificate i will go over in a new in another video how to get a.

Actual certificate from lets encrypt but for now were just going to use a self-signed one so were gonna go. In and show details and then visit the website safaris gonna be very mad at us its even making me. Type in my password but this does not matter because nobody in spoofing because nobody really cares if it exists. Someone once have a man-in-the-middle attack for me at my synology i will take that risk upon myself all right. And so now we can see in the upper left-hand corner weve got the little lock that means were using.

An https secure connection and so we know nobody can steal our data bu.
